Djembe Communications Launches First ‘Djembe Community’ CSR Initiative in Angolan Education Sector
‘My Dream’ Initiative Works with Angolan Children to Visually Express Themselves through Photography and Video
December 14, 2015 |Angola: Pan-African communications consultancy, Djembe Communications, today announced the first initiative under the ‘Djembe Community’ CSR platform, its social responsibility platform to support the communities in the markets where the consultancy operates. The initiative called ‘My Dream’ focuses on educating children on how to visually express themselves through photography and video and has been successfully launched at the ADPP School in Luanda, Angola.
‘My Dream’ is part of a wider focus on providing educational training for children that will see ‘Djembe Community’ in 2016 support young entrepreneurs by providing them with professional training development. In addition, ‘Djembe Community’ will work with humanitarian organizations to prevent child marriages and join the fight against malaria.
Mitchell Prather, Managing Director of Djembe Communications, commented: “The overarching aim of ‘Djembe Community’ is to support the people, communities and companies where we operate across Africa. We have invested a considerable amount of time to define our ongoing contribution to support the different needs of children and youth in Angola, Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria. We believe the program areas of Djembe Community will have a positive impact on the lives of people.”
The initial ‘My Dream’ workshop provided over 50 Angolan children between the age of 12 and 16 years with knowledge on how to use photography and video capabilities. A second workshop was held to offer the children the opportunity to share the pictures and videos they captured along with learning to edit their creative work. The initiative will provide children with the knowledge and communication tools they need to express themselves visually and emotionally; which for many of them will be an entirely new educational experience.
In January 2016, Djembe Communications aims to host The Children’s Art Exhibition in Luanda to showcase and auction the artwork produced by the children. The proceeds generated through the auction will support the ADPP School in Luanda to improve school infrastructure and further provide pupils with access to a wider range of creative opportunities.
Prather concluded, “The ‘My Dream’ initiative is part of a program that will educate children in key concepts of arts in order to develop their visual abilities and imagination, an area that schools in Angola have not yet focused on in their curriculums. We look forward to creating and supporting similar impactful program initiatives in 2016.”
